Shana Wilson, a renowned portrait artist from Alberta, Canada, is partnering with Saatchi Art to bring her larger-than-life-size portraits of women trailblazers to the Riveter, women’s co-working spaces in major cities across the US.
As women, young and old, are finding our voices as never before to push for equality and inclusivity, Shana came up with this bold idea to create a traveling and major art exhibition of exceptional women from all walks of life, inclusive of all cultures and orientations, to be exhibited in high-profile spaces in major cities. She is partnering with the Seattle-based non-profit women’s group, For Women Who Roar, and calling the exhibition, Women Who Roar, alluding to the Helen Reddy 1970s hit song that remains a modern-day anthem.
Noting that women historically have been portrayed in art as either titillating and nude, or in servitude, Shana is painting women looking confident, powerful, strong, and brave to create a collection of portraits of women trailblazers who all have one thing in common – the ability to inspire and create social change. Among those in her first collection are: Christine Blasey Ford, Anita Hill, Gloria Steinem, and other rule-makers and rule-breakers. I am honored and humbled to have been asked by Shana to sit for a portrait in this exhibit.
As a working portrait artist for more than 20 years, Shana holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta and has also enjoyed a successful career in advertising, software, and retail, including owning the Canadian rights to the luxury Italian handbag brand Mandarina Duck. And now she is sharing her artistic talents and passion with the world to raise awareness of the incredible achievements of women changemakers.
